NEWS 28 July 2006 WOMEN'S INTERESTS UNDER GOVERNMENT PROTECTION Navruz Wedding and Family Rites Center of Tashkent hosted a meeting dedicated to 15th anniversary of the independence of Uzbekistan. The meeting was organised by Tashkent khokimiat (city hall), Tashkent City Women's Committee, and Justice Department. Members of the Senate and the Legislative Chamber of Oliy Majlis (parliament), law enforcement officers, active members of women's committees, consultants for the issues of religious elucidation and moral education participated in the meeting. The topic discussed was "Women, their rights and obligations". According to the Chairman of the Committee for Legislation and Judicial-Legal Issues of the Senate of Oliy Majlis M. Rajabova, Deputy Khokim (Mayor) of Tashkent city, Chairman of City Women's Committee F. Abdurahimova and others who spoke at the meeting, women's status changes together with the process of democratisation and social renewal, modernisation and reformation of the country - their participation in the state and social construction increases. Presidential Decree "On additional measures to support the activity of Women's Committee of Uzbekistan" dated 25 May 2004 served as an important stimulus to the efforts in this direction. The document gives special attention to the issues of protection of maternity and infancy, further improvement of legal culture and literacy in the process of professional, physical, spiritual and intellectual development of women and their socio-legal protection. Improvement of women's legal literacy, careful explanation of the content and essence of reforms implemented in the judicial-legal system of the country are done in accordance wit the corresponding national programme. For this purpose, legal consultations have been organised and are being provided to women. Different sorts of conferences, roundtables, and meetings with experts are being organised for women in the framework of trainings on legal issues. Work carried out in mahallas (local communities) by the consultants with women and children on the issues of religious elucidation and spiritual-moral education has a positive effect. Its further improvement, strengthening of interaction between the mahalla active members, women's committees, consultants, representatives of law enforcement bodies requires time. Meeting participants discussed the interim tasks aimed at further improvement of moral-educational work among women, listened to the reports on protection of women's interests under the international laws and regulations, and the responsibility laid upon the justice organs in raising the legal literacy of citizens.
