NATIONAL TRAINERS GAIN GENDER MAINSTREAMING AND GENDER ANALYSIS SKILLS

On 8-12 March 2007, two training courses on "The basics of gender integration and gender analysis" for over 40 national trainers took place in hotel Poytaht, Tashkent.

The main goal of the events was to promote gender equality through building the capacity of national experts to use effectively gender mainstreaming tools and methodologies and to provide an opportunity to share knowledge and experience on gender issues.

International expert Ms. Olena Suslova, Gender Activity Coordinator of Indiana University Parliamentary Development Program in Kyiv, has been invited to conduct these training courses as well as several learning sessions for UNDP Uzbekistan's core and project staff. During the two-day trainings the participants had an opportunity to learn more about construction of gender, gender analysis concepts, gender mainstreaming tools and methodologies and their importance through practical exercises, group work and discussion.

The participants of the training course, national experts who were selected from all over the country through an open competition, underwent the first training session on the basics of gender and promotion of gender sensitivity in 2006. The main objective of the Gender Mainstreaming Training Course is to build a group of national trainers on gender mainstreaming for further promotion of this concept and skills among UNDP projects, national state and NGO partners for raising effectiveness of development programs and strategies.

The Project on Gender and Development, which the training course was organized, envisages the development and facilitation of a more favorable gender environment. This is aimed to achieve through building capacity of national gender experts to provide training courses on gender mainstreaming and advisory services on gender; supporting gender research and developing a network of journalists on gender to promote gender issues in media.
