NEWS 13 October 2009 UNDP INTERNATIONAL EXPERT TO HELP FORMULATE PROJECT PROPOSAL FOR MAINSTREAMING GENDER APPROACHES INTO RADIOACTIVE WASTE MANAGEMENT PROGRAMS A UNDP international expert of on mainstreaming of human and gender dimensions into environmental activity Ms.Billur Gungoren is now visiting Kyrgyzstan with a mission, which will last from 6 to 15 October. The aim of the mission is to provide an expert support to the UNDP Country Office and its national partners on using tools of human dimension and gender analysis in radioactive waste management in the Kyrgyz Republic. This visit is coordinated by the UNDP Democratic Governance programme and the project “Assessment of Radioactive Waste Management Capabilities of KR in Transboundary Context”. To obtain a whole picture of gender mainstreaming situation into radioactive waste management, Ms. Gungoren has had meetings with national partners, representatives of state bodies and civil society, expert community in gender and environment area, as well as the UN experts. Besides that, her visit to Mailuu-Suu of Jalal-Abad oblast, where the international consultant met with representatives of Mailuu-Suu city administration, city council and women NGO has greatly contributed to the assessment of the situation. The collected information will help define the most priority problems, develop recommendations and project proposal for further improvement of the situation. Also Ms. Billur Gungoren will conduct a workshop for experts from relevant state structures, academic and non-governmental organizations which will work on increasing potential in gender mainstreaming aspects of radioactive waste management as well as work out an action plan and project document on mainstreaming gender approaches and human dimensions in radioactive waste management programme in Kyrgyzstan.
